Today San Blas is a quiet fishing village and is best known for being the most popular destination for Birding in Mexico. On a relatively small area we can find over 300 different species with at least 25 Mexican endemics, by the ocean side the spectacular RED-BILLED TROPICBIRDS sometimes can be seeing nesting at the area, along with BLUE-FOOTED and BROWN BOOBIES. The boat trips always offered chances to spot some marine wildlife like SPOTTED, SPINNING and BOTTLE-NOSE DOLPHINS.

During the winter months the HUMP-BACK WHALES breed and nurse their calves at the area. GIANT PACIFIC MANTARAYS and MARINE TURTLES can also be spotted along with a number of migrating avian species that show up regularly.

The wetlands, estuaries and mangrove lagoons are probably the widest in Mexico and the most significant to be birded with 100´s of migratory birds plus the local specialties such as BARE-THROATED TIGER HERON, PUARAQUEES, MANGROVE WARBLER and MANGROVE VIREO, the impressive BOAT-BILLED HERON nesting at the area, NORTHERN POTOOS, PURPLE GALLINULES and NORTHERN JACANAS. The elusive RUFOUS-NECKED WOOD RAILS and GREEN KINGFISHERS among many others.
More inland the range of habitats extends from Palm forests, thorn forests and arid scrub towards tropical plantations within ecotones into the Tropical deciduous and temperate cloud forest itself. Usually the most exciting collection of species comes from these environments such as ELEGANT QUAIL, RUFOUS-BELLIED CHACHALACA, CRESTED GUAN, MEXICAN BLUE-RUMPED PARROTLETS, ORANGE-FRONTED PARAKEETS, LILAC-CROWNED PARROTS, CITREOLINE and ELEGANT TROGONS, RUSSET-CROWNED MOTMOTS, GOLDEN-CHECKEED, GREY-CROWNED, LINEATED and PALE-BILLED WOODPECKERS. IVORY-BILLED WOODCREEPER, SAN BLAS and PURPLISH-BACKED JAYS, BLACK-THROATED MAGPIE JAYS, RUFOUS BACKED and WHITE THROATED ROBINS, HAPPY and SIANALOA WRENS, SCRUB EUPHONIAS, RED-CROWNED ANT ATANAGERS, LONG-TAILED HERMITS. GOLDEN-CROWNED, MEXICAN WOOD-NYMPH, BROAD-BILLED, BEERRYLINE and CINAMMON HUMMINGBIRDS among others. LAUGHING, COLLARED-FOREST and BAT FALCONS. GOLDEN-CROWNED VIREOS, FAN-TAILED and RUFOUS CROWNED WARBLERS, BLUE, VARIED and PAINTED BUNTINGS, RUSTY-CROWNED GROUND SPARROW, WHITE-COLLARED SEEDEATER, SRTIPE HEADED SPARROW, BLACK VENTED, STREAK-BACKED ORIOLES and YELLOW-WINGED CACIQUES to name only a few.
At last but not least there are higher elevation specialties at a pine and oak forest about one hour away from San Blas. On the way there one can be rewarded with sightseeing’s of MILITARY OR GREEN MACAWS flying by wooded canyons. Mountain forests with rich ecotones that include WILD ORCHIDS. EPIPHITES and BROMELIADS are suitable for species such as WHITE-STRIPED WOODCREEPER, SPOTTED WRENS, RED-HEADED TANAGER, GREY-COLLARED BECARD, COLIMA PYGMY-OWL, BLACK HEADED SISKINS, RUFOUS-CAPPED WARBLER, BROWN-BACKED SOLITAIRES, even the rarest and elusive SOLITARY EAGLE and the tiny BUMBLEBEE HUMMINGBIRDS.

The San Blas, Nayarit Tour Information

SAN BLAS BIRDING EXPEDITION. A FEAST OF BIRDS....

San Blas is located about two hours north from Puerto Vallarta. Back in the 1700's when the Spaniards still ruled Mexico San Blas was the most important port on the Mexican pacific coast. Today San Blas is a quiet fishing village best known for being the most popular destination for Birding in Mexico. And rightly so. Within a small area we can find over 300 different species with at least 25 Mexican endemics.

The wide variety of habitats here range from mangrove lagoons to palm forests and seasonal thorn forest. Located on the coast it also offers chances to bird seashore banks, river mouths, volcanic islands, and islets. Moving inland habitats change from arid scrub and thorn forest to tropical deciduous forest and caducifolia forest with tropical plantations such as shaded coffee and mangos. Higher elevation include sub-perennial forests that eventually turn into temperate cloud forest.

Several exotic neotropic bird species as well as higher-elevation specialties will be well represented in these habitats and will make for a rewarding tour.
